When Did Project Start?

Project Salina is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1990 by Jack Parr and Jane Kramer to help address hunger in Salina, Kansas—especially during the summer months when the need for food assistance increases and donations traditionally decline. They recognized that while local food agencies often receive generous support during the holidays, maintaining adequate food supplies throughout the summer remained a significant challenge.

Project Salina was created to bridge that gap. Each May, Project Salina raises funds that is used to purchase food for distribution to partner agencies throughout the entire year. By providing multiple distributions during the months of highest need, Project Salina helps ensure that individuals and families have access to food when it matters most.

Project Salina relies solely on cash donations, grants, and the support of the board members and volunteers to carry out its mission. When agencies experience shortages, they contact Project Salina, and the requested food items are purchased to keep pantry shelves stocked.

Partner agencies include the Emergency Aid Food Bank, The Salvation Army, The Salina Rescue Mission, The Ashby House, the Domestic Violence Association of Central Kansas (DVACK), and Salina Grace.

Project Salina’s annual fundraising campaign runs from May 1 through May 31, with all funds dedicated to supporting these six agencies and the neighbors they serve.
